les mis

A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I went and saw Les Misérables playing in Vancouver... I wasn't sure what to expect, since I'm not really a fan of musicals, and have never really had urges to go in the past. The whole thing was very new to me, so I thought I might as well give it a shot. It took me awhile to accept that every piece of dialogue was sung (naive me thought it would just be interludes of music... lesson learned). Anyhoo, I was pleasantly surprised - it was quite good and several of the singers had very powerful and moving moments. I'm glad we went and that I got to experience my first Broadway-type musical... although, I don't think I am quite ready for Cats.

  2. It is kind of fun to escape reality for a bit and enjoy another world via musicals. I like them occasionally but I am not a broadway type, myself. ;)

  8. You chose a good one, wow! Yes, Cats is a little much... I saw it as a teen and loved half of it, the other half... not so much!

  9. I absolutely love Les Mis, but it could be a little overwhelming as your first musical! haha It's the best, though.

And for the record, most of them are just interludes of music. Only a few of them are constant singing like this. :)

  18. I haven't seen a Broadway-style musical yet. Glad you enjoyed your first! It's funny that you mentioned Cats, as I saw it advertised on the side of a bus today and the friend I was with at the time asked if I wanted to see it. I said no. Maybe I should reconsider. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised too! :D

  20. I love musicals, and Les Mis is my favorite of them all. I've seen a few in New York, but I've never seen that one unfortunately. I would also recommend Phantom of the Opera, there is a great film version of it. There is also a good non-musical version of Les Mis on film. The beauty of the it is that it is a powerful book as well, so it translates to many tellings. Sorry this comment sort of rambled on. :)

  22. Cats is DEFINITELY not for people who haven't seen many musicals. There's really basically no plot...just a whole bunch of different cats showing up to a big meeting of cats and...well, introducing themselves as they arrive. Yeah. That's about it.
