puffy purples

Summer is pretty much coming to an end, so I thought I would post a summer-y photo of some of the last flowers that are still kicking around. Not sure what these are called... anyone? anyone?... I call them puffy purples (I know, not too original)... or how about purple styrofoam balls on a stick? Hmm... that is worse and a bit wordy... I will stick to puffy purples until I learn their true name.

  1. I don't remember their name but they're one of my favourite flowers in a garden :)

  2. I don't know what they are called, but I love them! I'd love to have some in the long winding flower beds on the South side of my place.

    Have a grat day!

  3. Your guess was pretty close. Those are Allium hollandicum - otherwise know as the Purple Sensation.

  4. Lovely... I think they are Ornamental Onions or Allium. Enjoy the last of the flowers for a while :)

  5. those are really pretty. I've seen them before and I've been wondering if they would work for wedding flowers...I know they are onions but do they stink?

  6. Beautiful! I'm going to have to plant some of those and since everyone says Allium, I'm on the hunt for just that :) They remind me of yellow craspedia, but better

  8. Ooh, alliums! I love them, yours are blooming so much later than mine. Mine bloom in late May, they're so much fun. I incorporated one into a spring flower artwork piece that I did earlier this year.

  19. "What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet" From Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet

They are lovely flowers and have a rather whimsical look to them, like something out of Alice in Wonderland.
I especially like your last days of summer-y photo, it's a nice composition and I love its soft colors and lush green-ness. :)
