crunchy leaves

Crunch, crunch, crunch… we have been enjoying our walks this crisp autumn. Every time we come home, it seems like the boys are bringing back another collection of chestnuts and coloured leaves. Too bad I don't like eating roasted chestnuts (is it me, or do they smell better than they taste?)… and now the leaf pile is starting to pile up on our balcony (this was my compromise of having them inside the house). I am sure the collection will keep growing in the coming weeks.

whooooooo, me?

I hope everyone had a Happy Halloween! Here are some snaps of Jasper's costume... he was a little grey owl. It started with a fleece track suit I got at Old Navy.... and some felt additions sewn here and there... and then voila!... a fluffy grey owl emmerged... not too shabby for a non-sewer (just, maybe, don't look too closely at the stitch work). The last pic is of our hallway of bats... which are soon to come down... sigh.

pumpkin patch time

Ok, I am just catching up on my Halloween postings right now.... so there's going to be a bunch of Halloween themed posts today and tomorrow. This past weekend we went to the pumpkin patch.... well, this was actually our second trip... the first trip (as you can see from the bottom pic) there was quite a bit of rain so it was a rather short and soggy one. Second time faired much better, so I was able to get some more snaps of all the decorated jack-o-lanterns. I will post more photos soon of our decorated house and, of course, Jasper's Halloween costume!

falling leaves

The leaves are changing colours all around our neighbourhood... and it is making for some nice autumn walks... well, ok... except for the rainy wet weather... that dampens it a little bit. Still makes for nice snapshots though! Happy Monday!

One of my favourite things about the autumn are the leaves changing colour all around our neighbourhood... although sometimes they can tend to be on the soggier side here in rainy Vancouver. Makes for a pretty snapshot, nevertheless. Happy Monday!

cute and mushy

Encountered these on one of our little autumn walks the other day. They looked so perfect, I thought they were fake... yes, yes... that is my urban naiveness showing. (In all fairness, they were near a house that was elaborately decorated for Halloween, so, um yah, that's why I assumed they weren't real). As I walked away, I couldn't help thinking of the Smurfs... falalalalalala...

pumpkin patch kid

A few pumpkin picking pictures to share today... and yes, I had to dress Jasper accordingly for the occasion. I have been waiting for the day that his noggin could fit this hat I got him last year, and that day finally came... it was perfect for his first wheelbarrow ride on the pumpkin farm. I swear he is smizing in the last photo... or maybe that is just me watching too much Top Model.

turkey coma

A little late in posting today, since it is the Thanksgiving holiday here in Canada.... well, that and I am suffering from a major case of turkey coma and slept in a bit. We had the family over for a big feast yesterday, so it was a long day of chopping, basting, mashing, baking and eating, of course. I will probably recover from this coma by tonight, when we'll be chipping away at the mountain of leftovers. Happy Thanksgiving!

my little pumpkin

We went to the local farm on the weekend to pick up some fresh local veggies and were pleasantly reminded that pumpkin season has started! I refrained from getting one this early, since there is nothing grosser than possible rotting gourds sitting on our balcony, not to mention the added task of having to keep it away from one very curious toddler. So it was decided that pumpkin picking will have to wait a couple more weeks in this household. Jasper did get to have a practice run though... the whole time we were there, he insisted on trying to sit on every single one... perhaps he was playing musical pumpkins in his head.

yellow and gold

It has been sunny here that past few days, so me and Jasper have been going for long stroller walks along the autumn tree-lined streets. Who wouldn't want a little yellow and gold to brighten the day?

pumpkin family

We have finally carved our pumpkins! We carved them a bit last minute this year, and sadly one of three big ones we got from our trip to the pumpkin patch was a wee bit rotten...ugh. So, instead I carved a wee baby pumpkin fella for our wee baby. Here is our pumpkin family! Hope everyone has a Happy Halloween with lots of treats! We will be enjoying some yummy sweets (yummy store bought pumpkin and chocolate tarts)... mmmmm.

pumpkin pressure

Ok, so we still haven't carved our pumpkins yet (where has the time gone?)... and Halloween is coming up fast. I think that is what we will be doing tonight. For inspiration though, we did venture out last night to view other carved pumpkins. The pumpkin pressure is on! Alas, I haven't been a total Halloween slacker... after some struggle with the sewing machine and needle and thread, baby Jasper's costume is done! Check back this weekend for the big reveal!

pumpkin patch kid

A new picture of Jasper to share with you today. This was taken on our trip to the pumpkin patch (see yesterday's post). I had to get him all gussied up in his autumn attire for the occasion (yes, I am going to enjoy playing dress-up with the baby as long as I can). Oh, and that is my knee in the bottom right of the photo propping up my child... he is still a bit tippy.

oh gourd-ness!

I hope everyone up here in Canada had a great Thanksgiving long weekend! We had a great weekend with family and visits (ie. ate lots and lots and then complained about it afterwards), as well as enjoyed the very autumn-ey weather (woo-hoo, fall sweater time!). Thought I would share a pic of some gourd branches my sweet friend Carley (check out her blog Secret Squirrel) gave me the other day... aren't they pretty?... they almost look like tomatoes. Not sure if they are edible or not... I am thinking not... it always seems the prettiest plants tend to be the most poisonous and non-edible. Perhaps it's their way of luring prey in... mwahahahaha.

first day of fall

Today is the first day of fall! While I am sad to see the summer come and go, I must admit that fall is my favourite season... colourful leaves, fresh crisp air, autumn harvest and Halloween and Thanksgiving... can't wait! Time to shelve the sandals and tank tops and break out the socks, suede boots and cozy sweaters!

fiery day

So I am a bit late with the post today... woke up to no power. Turns out there was a huge fire a couple of blocks away from our place early this morning that destroyed five small businesses... including one of my fave diners, Slickety Jim's Chat N' Chew... yikes! Ironically, our condo building's fire alarms are being tested today... so I get the pleasure of hearing sporadic piercing alarms while I work... oh goody. So, I think today is a good day to have a pretty pic to look at... something relaxing and pretty to counter today's chaos and noise.

global warming?

So to my shock and awe... as everything green on our balcony is dying a slow autumn death... there is actually one plant that seems to be on its own clock... is this global warming? I actually have blooming flowers!... and believe it or not, these are from last easter! Believe me... this is an amazing leap for my attempt at a green thumb (things on our balcony have a 50/50 chance out here). Oh no, I hope they didn't hear that... oh, I hope I didn't jinx them... please don't die, please don't die little flowery friends!

autumn berry trees

I love the falling leaves of autumn... and lately I have been noticing more and more trees that have beautiful bright autumn berries... so pretty! On a nature walk over the weekend, we managed to snap pics of three different berry-types in varying shades of red, orange and pink. I really want some to have in the house, but am trying to resist the urge of clamoring up a tree with a small saw... so I think I may have to visit the local florist today to see if they have any pre-cut ones.

happy halloween!

Some spooky photos today courtesy of my hubby Roger... he managed to capture some pretty cool shots the other night while the moon was out and the sky was actually clear. Happy Halloween and have a Spooktacular weekend!

spill the guts

So after much digging around the internet, I stumbled upon a Bobby Flay recipe for roasted pumpkin seeds... but alas, I didn't have the right chili powders in my pantry, so the recipe took a turn... and we ended up improvising a bit... ok, a lot. We took the washed seeds from three fabulously carved pumpkins (yes, I am going to too my own horn here), a tablespoon of olive oil, chili powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and a dash of worcestershire sauce - no measurements, just sort of eyeballed. Into the oven at 275 deg F  for 1 hour and taa-daa... yummy pumpkin seeds! Off to munch on some more!
