stoked sessions 2010

In the mood for some art this weekend? How about helping out a good cause? Well, just wanted to let you know that my hubby Roger has an art piece in the Stoked Sessions 2010: Predictions exhibtion, an art show and benefit for Stoked LA. Artwork from the best street and fine artists will be on auction to benefit Stoked Mentoring (an organization that brings action sports, mentoring and coaching to at-risk and disadvantaged youth). We won't be able to check out the show, since the Bun's due date is on June 5th, the show date.... but check it out if your in the LA area! Would love to hear how it goes!

99 red balloons

Some exciting exhibition news to share today. If you happen to be in the city of Ottawa, Ontario, check out the group show "99 Red Balloons" happening at canteen art shop + gallery! Remember that collage I posted about last week? It will be part of the exhibition along with other national and international artists until May 31st. I won't be able to make it halfway across the country to check it out... so, let me know if you happen to see it. Hope everyone has a happy long weekend!

culture counts

A piece of exciting news to share today! From over 1187 entries coming from 82 countries, my poster design submission (titled: Interlinking Dialogue) received an Honourable Mention in the UNESCO Culture Counts Poster Competition! Woohoo! As one of the 30 Honourable Mentions, the poster will be displayed online on UNESCO's website as well as printed and used in an exhibition for the International Year of Cultural Diversity, a festival taking place at UNESCO's Paris headquarters in May 2010. Unfortunately, I won't be able to see the exhibit in Paris (due to timing and budget... although I would love to! Who wouldn't mind a venture to France for a holiday)... so might try and send some extended family members who live there to check it out. If you happen to be in Paris mid to late May... check it out!

art of craft at the olympiad

Huh?... crafts at the Olympics? Oh yes.... and I don't mean ski pole cozies either. There's a cool exhibition going on at the Museum of Vancouver called the Art of Craft as part of the Cultural Olympiad. We had a chance to check it out last week... and here are some detail shots of some of the works we saw at the show (there are over 170 works from all over Canada as well as Korea). Seeing all these beautiful pieces makes me wish I had a huge home and limitless supply of funds so that I can have them decorating my house... ahhhh, to dream.

flower power

On Saturday, we ventured to the Vancouver Art Gallery to escape the wet weather, and of course, try and bump up our cultural content for the weekend. One of the most beautiful and impressive pieces we saw that day was artist Michael Lin's installation on the exterior of the gallery titled A Modest Veil... it is huge and a sight not to be missed!! Three large hand-painted, yes... that's right, hand-painted murals cover the building's facade (I only managed to squeeze in two of the panels into the first photo, they are that gigantic). The pattern is based on traditional Taiwanese textiles. Venture downtown Vancouver if you haven't seen it yet... it will be up until May 2010.

sport re-imagined

So many of you may have heard of this little thing called the Winter Olympic Games that are coming to Vancouver? Lot's of exciting events are happening around town, both official and non.official... so I thought I would share an art exhibition that my hubby Roger is participating in.

With over ten other artists, he will be showcasing some of his work at "Sport Re-Imagined" at the Leigh Square Community Arts Village in Port Coquitlam from January 21 - March 21. I will post some pics of his work when we snap some at the opening night in February... these are some pieces by some of the other artists that will be in the show. Hope you can check out the show!

A description of the show: "Sport Re-imagined is a group exhibition showcasing artists whose work challenges, re-imagines, and reinterprets sport and the paraphernalia and constructs that surround it. Artists ask the viewer to envision familiar objects with a new perspective: robots made of bicycle parts, skis transformed into furniture, tents and rugby shirts altered into couture dresses or skateboard decks that look like abstract paintings. Other works emphasize the physical and bodily exertion of sport; the potential energy in our bones and muscles."

ravishing beasts

As an answer to what we did this Halloween weekend: we went to the Museum of Vancouver to check out their new exhibit Ravishing Beasts - an extensive collection of taxidermy from the 1890s to 1950, followed by a screening of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho... a great combo indeed! Seeing all the life-sized stuffed animals was a bit creepy, but pretty interesting, since it gave everyone a sense of scale of some of these large beasts. And the bonus was, I finally got to see Psycho in its entirety (yes, I must have been one of the last few on earth who hadn't seen it)... and it was great!... love how the taxidermy theme ran through the whole night.... spooky!

on to toronto!

An update today on the Smile On Your Brother art show. The show is now on its way to Livestock in Toronto (September 25th - 27th) after some great showings in Vancouver, Calgary and Saskatoon (pics above). So, if you are in the neighborhood, stop on by and check it out! It's also heading to Montreal and Quebec City (see here for dates).

My hubs, Roger and I had collaborated under his Crooked Walker label to create a woodburned owl skate deck for the show. If you look real close in some of the photos, you'll be able to pick it out... a bit "Where's Waldo", I know... but I'm feeling like a proud parent that makes you look at the hundreds of kids photos jammed into a fold-out wallet... except, in this case it's a skate deck, and... er, there are only 3 photos.
