bad kitty

So I just happened to stumble upon this big 'ol cougar attacking a game bird over the weekend... ok, ok... the cougar is stuffed and is permanently and eternally fixed in this pose and there was no danger factor present, but nevertheless, it made for a pretty cool photo. I find taxidermy displays really fascinating, and I always wonder how they decide what final poses these animal will have. I guess they decided this one needed to be in attack mode... meow! (ps. this big kitty is located in Vancouver's Science World, if you are wanting to check it out).

art of craft at the olympiad

Huh?... crafts at the Olympics? Oh yes.... and I don't mean ski pole cozies either. There's a cool exhibition going on at the Museum of Vancouver called the Art of Craft as part of the Cultural Olympiad. We had a chance to check it out last week... and here are some detail shots of some of the works we saw at the show (there are over 170 works from all over Canada as well as Korea). Seeing all these beautiful pieces makes me wish I had a huge home and limitless supply of funds so that I can have them decorating my house... ahhhh, to dream.

museum of anthropology

What to do when it is raining and hum drum on the weekend... well, we headed to the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, my favourite museum in Vancouver. You could literally spend hours in there exploring their collection - my favourites being the late 19the and early 20th century First Nations sculptures and totem poles in the Great Hall (middle photo), Haida artist Bill Reid's sculpture "The Raven and the First Men" (top photo), as well as the outdoor exhibits (bottom photo). The museum is finishing up their visible storage collection... basically a huge exhibition gallery with tons of pull-out drawers and display cases of thousands of artifacts... so we can't wait to go back once that opens.

in the land of chalk drawings

This past weekend, Roger and I ventured to the MOV (Museum of Vancouver) to check out the new Velo-City exhibit, an exhibition of the bicycle revolution in Vancouver. On our way in, we got a tad sidetracked by the giant chalkboard wall the museum had... we couldn't resist adding our own tags to the hundreds of others. This photo of Roger reminded me of that old cartoon Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings... one of my faves when I was a wee one... does anyone else remember it?.. maybe it was only on in Canada and the UK?
