garden fresh

This year we decided to make use of our small balcony space and plant a garden. We planted lettuce, herbs (dill, oregano, chives and tarragon), chilli peppers, and tomatoes... oh yes, and a pumpkin. The lettuce just started sprouting, which is very exciting, and the pumpkin plant is growing like a weed. We'll be transplanting it soon into a proper garden plot at mom's house, so there won't be a miraculous orange giant haunting our balcony. There's still a bit of room left out there, so still trying to decide what else to plant. Suggestions? Will update with more pics as more things start growing!

Ooo! I love the idea of using a balcony to make a garden. I may just have to do that as I only have a deck... Nice.

I just bought my herbs the other day but have yet to plant them. Maybe this weekend!

I planted some ranunculus out on my balcony... and it's already dead four weeks later. I think I have a black thumb, not a speck of green. oh well, your little garden looks lovely!

Great way to use your little space. We have a huge yard full of rocky dirt and haven't planted a thing...

Exciting! Tomatoes grow like crazy but definitely want to wait until you move it to your moms backyard, because they grow so fast!

Lovely pictures. I would plant some basil, to go with the tomatoes. Then all you'll need is some olive oil and maybe some mozzarella cheese, and you'll have delicious caprese salad all summer. :)

We want to start a garden ourselves but as neither of us have a green thumb or any gardening experience we're a little apprehensive about digging in. Love your little green sprouts though, we just may do it yet

Looks wonderful. I have a friend who just started her own square foot garden. It is neat.

Yahoo for balcony gardens! We've had great luck with tomatoes (various kinds) and jalepeƱo peppers, plus herbs of all kinds. Good luck with everything — and definitely a good idea to transplant the pumpkins to a real plot! :)

Spring has sprung! Love seeing new plantlings peeking out of the soil...

I've got some tiny basil starts basking in the sunshine in the kitchen.

Great idea! I plant flowers in hanging baskets on my balcony, but maybe I should try some herbs or berries too. Good luck with yours!

We have a similar set up with all our plants in containers. This year was the first year that we are trying organic strawberries. They are doing very well! You might want to consider adding these to your garden.

I did a blog post with a picture on my blog for reference - http://californiablue.tumblr.com/post/96875167/our-first-attempt-at-growing-organic-strawberries

Well, get some more salad on the go - you can get great oriental or spicy mixes that instantly make a great salad bowl. We ate salad twice a day all last summer from a very modest plot.

Other things that do well in containers are blueberries, strawberries, rainbow chard (keeps going for ages) and if you can get hold of some large-ish olive oil containers ( from a restaurant or store for example) then you could quite happily grow a few different types of tomatoes and they look beautiful!
