bird sanctuary

On the weekend, we went for a walk at the local bird sanctuary (about an hour's drive outside of Vancouver). Armed with two small paper bags of bird seed, we mostly encountered mass flocks of ducks that would follow the rustling sound of our paper bags. One of the trails was heavily guarded by several pairs of hissing geese at several points. In order to bypass, we ended up throwing bird seed one way as a distraction, while quickly scooting past. The last thing I needed was to be goosed by a giant goose.

i LOVE feeding birds! it seems so quaint and all, but they're frickin hilarious - the way they all freak out and run after bread/seeds etc when you really launch it. :)

(i've been chased and bitten by a goose - it's not half as funny as it sounds/looks - they've vicious lil buggers!)

We have a nice gaggle of geese in a big park that we like to visit. I think my 3 year old has decided that she wants to be an honorary member of the flock and likes to sit in the middle of them. Believe it or not they never seem to mind!

I love to feed the birds and do so every time I go out to the lake...the ducks are my favorite, they always make me laugh.

They're beautiful birds – great pics too! We live near a small lake and have those geese down here. They're just gorgeous.

Ducks are cute and these ones are beautiful too. Those shiny green heads? I love them. I like that you're incorporating birds into your work too. Nice.

I always loved feeding birds growing up. I don't anymore though, thanks to my sister, who works for the EPA. She has taught her sons (and me) that feeding birds makes them dependent on humans--rather than their instincts--for food and this causes issues for the birds when the humans aren't around. I miss feeding the birds but feel guilty if I do. LOL

is that the one in ladner? i've been dying to get out to the bird sanctuary again. today would've been a great day for it. last time we were there my friend got a little too close to a crane and was chased about 20 meters. i'd love to have caught it on film but the memory of it still makes me smile.

oh yes, this is the one in Ladner. I probably should have mentioned that we got the seed from the actual bird sanctuary, and weren't feeding random wild birds... ooops!
