collage: casting a spell on the bear

Now that it is spring time here in Vancouver, there will be more black bears waking from hibernation and roaming around our local mountain trails. A few years ago we had gone for a summer nature hike uphill on Mount Seymour when we heard a distant warning from another hiker, who was quite a bit ahead and above us. Hearing someone shout, "Hikers! There are three bears up and to your left!" is not the phrase you want to hear whilst enjoying a promenade. (Three bears can only mean a mama and two babies). Anyways, we quickly clapped, hooted and hollered (to scare the bears away) and made a quick detour, thus avoiding any bear encounter and ending our hike. I wish I had a magic wand that day to cast a spell on the bears to let us pass, just like in the fairytales.

great piece!

i'm originally from the toronto area and my family still live there. my mom routinely sends me newspaper clippings on the dangers of bears and even some bear bells once! i think she thinks they're roaming robson street. ;-)

I second your magic wand idea. It'd be amazing to see the bears up close, if you knew there was no danger, of course. But that sucks that you had to end your hike early :(
But YAY, for that other hiker giving you warning :)

That's crazy! It sounds scary, but fascinating too. I love going for hikes, but I have never come across a family of bears. Thanks for that story!

The image and your story go so well together, it would be wonderful to cast a spell on a bear just for a moment to get a closer look at their magnificentness.

Oh wow. I wouldn't know what to do if faced with a bear. I suppose I'd stand frozen while it ate my arm.

When I worked at Lewiscraft we used to sell packages of jingle bells to hikers. They'd tie them to their shoes. I guess they aren't really like magic wands but you would have that magical ringing sound with each step.
